The intricately patterned fabric that we use for these cushions is a traditional textile made by the villagers from only a handful of towns in a tiny pocket of East Sumba, a tropical island of vitreous waters east of Bali.
Known as 'pahikung', this refined fabric is made on special bamboo and timber looms and is very technically-demanding and labor-intensive to create. For this reason, it was traditionally only made for the noble families of Sumba for use as decorative panels for skirts and sarongs.
The patterns on each piece of pahikung are inspired by the life and iconography particular to Sumba and each piece is individually selected by SOUQ.
